A Sand Fence is an artificial barrier used to reduce wind velocity at the ground surface and trap blowing sand.  Sand Fencing is typically used for rebuilding frontal dunes along coastal areas.  In recent years, the amount of sand fencing along the coast has grown significantly as property owners looked to protect their homes from storms and long-term beach erosion.   As such, miles of sand fencing – some of which is improperly installed or neglected – now line our Florida beaches.  

Since improper sand fencing can pose a threat to sea turtles & turtle nesting, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection has developed the following sand fencing guidelines:
